November is just around the corner, and it’s a special month for us here at Orange County CyberKnife – but not because of Thanksgiving. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and this is a cause we proudly support at our cancer treatment and radiation oncology center. Lung cancer is among the deadliest forms of cancer, and while advances in treatment options such as CyberKnife have made it more treatable than ever, the best way to combat lung cancer is still through raising awareness, early detection, and early treatment.
About Lung Cancer
Excluding skin cancer, lung cancer is the second most common form of cancer in both men and women – surpassed only by prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. Every year, roughly 220,000 new cases are diagnosed. Lung cancer is also the most common cause of cancer-related death for both men and women, killing more than 150,000 people each year and accounting for 25% of all cancer deaths. While lung cancer most commonly occurs in people with a history of smoking, it can also affect non-smokers – and no matter the cause, it’s always a serious problem.
Treating Lung Cancer
The best way to fight lung cancer is through prevention, early detection, and early treatment, but unfortunately, the latter two are often difficult to accomplish with lung cancer. That’s because most forms of lung cancer produce few or no symptoms until advanced stages of the disease, making it difficult to detect lung cancer before it’s grown very serious. That said, advances in cancer treatment technology provide more hope for treatment than ever before.
At OC CyberKnife, we offer a number of industry-leading cancer treatment options, including treatments for lung cancer. Our flagship treatment is CyberKnife: a revolutionary radiation therapy system that delivers high-dose radiation directly to the site of a tumor with sub-millimeter accuracy. CyberKnife is a completely noninvasive treatment that doesn’t require the use of uncomfortable immobility braces. Most patients can receive the treatment in just 1 to 5 hour-long sessions, and CyberKnife often produces few or no side effects.
Other possible treatments for lung cancer include surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy. Your cancer doctor will work with you to choose the best treatment course for your case and lifestyle, and most patients will require a combination of methods for the most effective treatment.
