At Orange County CyberKnife, we want to empower women to know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, catch them early, and seek treatment immediately. Breast cancer affects women of all backgrounds across different ages. In the past year, the tragic deaths of Kelly Preston and Helen McCrory really brought more attention to breast cancer and the need for recognizing its signs. People often think that checking for a lump or mass in your breast is the way to spot cancer early. However, lumps are just one sign of this complex condition. In fact, there are a number of things women should be aware of when it comes to breast cancer and we at Orange County CyberKnife are to help you learn what they are.
Primary Signs & Symptoms of Breast Cancer
Although a lump or a mass in the breast is definitely a sign to seek medical care, there are other signs that women need to know. The following are the primary signs and symptoms of breast cancer:
Changes to the Skin’s Texture: Breast cancer can cause cell changes and inflammation in the skin on and around the breast. Look for scaly skin around the nipple and areola and skin thickening on any part of the breast.
Nipple Discharge: Some women experience nipple discharge that is different from their breast milk, such as blood. This discharge can be clear, milky, yellow, or even green and red.
Dimpling of the Breast: Some types of breast cancer can cause a buildup of lymph fluid, which may result in the skin being dimpled or pitted.
Lymph Node Changes: Lymph nodes are present throughout our bodies. Breast cancer can affect the ones closest to the breast in areas like your armpit, chest, or collar bone area. Be cautious of any changes or inflammation in these areas.
Nipple or Breast Pain: Breasts tend to go through many changes as you age. Different factors like your period or pregnancy can cause you to feel pain or discomfort. However, if you feel prolonged pain or even burning in the nipple or breast, this can be a sign of an underlying condition.
Nipple Retraction or Inversion: Breast cancer can cause changes in the nipple. Abnormal changes such as the retraction or inversion of the nipple are clear signs to watch out for.
Redness or Swelling: Due to inflammation, either one or both breasts may become red and/or swollen. This is often coupled with tenderness as well.
If you notice any of these signs or other irregularities in your breasts, please contact your doctor for further examination. It is critical that these signs are caught early so that breast cancer treatment can be administered immediately. You should also be aware that some people do not have any symptoms, so getting regular check-ups can aid in early detection. Remember that being aware of the signs of breast cancer does not replace the need to have regular screening tests like mammograms. These tests can help you spot breast cancer even before any symptoms appear.
