Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer for American men. In fact, it affects 1 in 7 men nationwide. Prostate cancer occurs when there is abnormal cell growth in the prostate gland – a small walnut-size gland that surrounds the bladder and urethra, and is in front of the rectum. In order to check for prostate cancer, men should undergo a prostate exam by their physician. It is important to undergo regular prostate exams to catch prostate cancer early and administer cancer treatment immediately.

Prostate Screening Tests

In order to effectively check for all types of prostate cancer, your doctor may do one of two prostate screening tests or both.

Digital Rectal Exam: During a rectal exam, your doctor will insert a gloved, lubricated finger to examine your prostate from the rectum. Because it is adjacent to your prostate, the rectum allows for the best access to your prostate gland. If abnormalities are found in your prostate, your doctor may require further tests. These abnormalities may include the texture of the gland, the size, or an irregular shape.

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test: During a normal check-up with your physician, they may choose to do a prostate blood test in which blood is drawn from your vein. A normal amount of PSA is typically found in the blood. However, if high amounts of PSA are found, this may indicate an infection or inflammation of the prostate.

Diagnosing & Treating Prostate Cancer

If your doctor believes you may have prostate cancer, they will require further tests to check for symptoms, including the following tests:

  • Rectal Ultrasound
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Prostate Biopsy
