Types of Gynecologic Cancer

The term gynecologic cancer doesn’t actually refer to a specific condition, but rather serves as a blanket term for a number of specific cancers affecting women’s reproductive organs. While there are many subtypes of gynecologic cancer, the main specific forms of gynecologic cancer include:

  • Cervical Cancer
  • Ovarian Cancer
  • Uterine Cancer
  • Vaginal Cancer
  • Vulvar Cancer

Stages of Gynecologic Cancer

Because gynecologic cancer refers to multiple specific conditions, there is no unified staging system for all gynecologic cancers – instead, each specific cancerous condition has its own unique system for determining the stage and severity of the cancer. That said, all gynecologic cancers follow a four-stage system, where Stage I is the least severe and Stage IV is the most severe. Generally, a cancer is more severe if the initial tumor is large, if the cancer has infected lymph nodes, and if the cancer has spread (metastasized) to distant sites or organs.

Both the type and stage of cancer will affect the treatment options available to you. Your cancer doctor will work with you to determine the best possible treatments for your unique case, creating a treatment plan that helps you beat cancer with as little disruption to your life as possible. Your doctor may recommend any of the following cancer treatments:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Targeted Therapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Radiation Therapy
