Did you know that January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month? We at Orange County Cyberknife want to ensure that all women and men know the symptoms and treatment for this type of cancer so that they can care for themselves and their partners. Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix, the opening to the uterus from the vagina. Most cases of cervical cancer are caused by different strains of human papillomavirus (HPV). Both men and women can reduce the number of cases of cervical cancer by getting the HPV vaccine. In particular, women should undergo a cervical cancer screening and pap smear every three years.
Symptoms of Cervical Cancer
Unfortunately, early stages of cervical cancer produce almost no symptoms. That’s why it is crucial for all women to undergo a pap smear every three years to confirm a negative test. Advanced cervical cancer symptoms include the following:
- Vaginal bleeding after intercourse and/or between periods
- Watery and/or bloody vaginal discharge
- Pelvic pain and/or pain during intercourse
If you have any of these symptoms, please contact OC Cyberknife for a diagnosis and cancer treatment in Orange County.
Cervical Cancer Treatment
Cervical cancer treatment in Orange County will depend on the stage of the cancer. For early stage cervical cancer, surgery is normally the most appropriate and effective option. Depending on the growth of the cancer, just a portion of the cervix may be removed, the entire cervix may be removed (a trachelectomy), or the cervix and uterus may be removed (hysterectomy). If the cancer is found at a more advanced stage, one of the following treatments may be used:
- Radiation
- Chemotherapy
- Targeted drug therapy
- Immunotherapy
- Supportive palliative care
Discuss with your doctor to find out what is the most appropriate option for you. If you have any questions, this would be a great time to address them.
